Land of the Seven Rivers: A Brief History of India’s Geography by Sanjeev Sanyal

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The book’s title is somewhat misleading. The land of seven rivers does not represent India. It is a part of north western India. Also this book is not about the history of India’s geography but for the first chapter. Despite this, the author has done a great job with the content. This is a book about India’s history. But unlike our text books, each era of Indian history is given ample coverage. The content is compelling and keeps the reader thoroughly engaged. The author is opinionated and his opinions often deviate from the mainstream views. However the author had backed his own opinions with adequate reasoning. The author also weaves themes of lions, imperial symbolism, civilization and competitiveness across different historical periods. I would highly recommend this book to any one interested in Indian history.
